DAY 220: The Perfect Day.

April 24, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Today was truly the perfect day. I started off my new Mon, Tue, Thurs-Sat work schedule this week, which meant that I had the day off.

I still got up early-ish (8am) but I had the luxury of lounging around in bed for another hour. I wanted to get ahead start on my day, but at an easy pace.

First I went to my local neighborhood coffee shop to get my daily caffeine fix and update my blog. I had plenty of more writing to do (like my one-man show, which I’ve been slacking on) but I had already made up my mind that today I was going to do whatever I felt like doing. And today, instead of spending all day inside, glued to my computer, I felt like being outside.

Of course, I still needed a little more computer time, so I grabbed a cup of joe to go, headed back home, and sat on my back patio enjoying the 70 degree weather.

Once I was all caught up on my e-mails, it was time to get dirty. I threw on my favorite old pair of cut-off jeans and a wife beater (which I only wear in the privacy of my own home, or while running) and I got to work on cleaning up our backyard.

Yes, I know it’s kind of stupid to be cleaning out my backyard when Jeffrey and I are more than likely going to have to move before the summer starts. But I’ve come to the conclusion that we’ll have at least one more month at our apartment, and I’ll be damned if I’m not gonna use that backyard as much of possible in that time.

Cleaning out that bitch was definitely an all day project. Besides your normal dead grass and leaves… there was also a layer of peanut shells, hand rolled cigarettes, and glass littered across our yard. And garbage. Lots of random garbage, like 3 giant gasoline containers, rotten oranges, and a grill that wasn’t there when we first moved in, but somehow showed up over the winter.

4 hours and 7 garbage bags later, things were finally shaping up back there. I can actually see the grass. Or at least, the few patches of grass in between the dirt.

Of course, today was only Phase One of Operation Backyard. But it was a damn good start. And it felt good to get it done. Whenever I feel like my life is a mess, cleaning up a more tangible mess always makes me feel better.

After working all afternoon in the backyard I went for a very satisfying, yet torturous, 30 minute run. I ran through Fort Green park, which I had been meaning to explore ever since moving into the hood last Sept.

I came home, cleaned myself up real good, and lounged around listening to music and playing on my laptop for awhile.

Once night had fallen (8pm, love that it’s getting darker later now), my Boo came over and we made our way into the city for one of his friend’s birthday party at an bar that is known to be a mecca for old gay men.

Now, I guess it wasn’t a truly perfect day, since I didn’t met any silver foxes. But there was one or two piece of old man eye candy for me to look at. There were also a few crazies for me to people watch.

After a few rounds I was on my way back home, but not before stopping for that perfect late-night, slightly-drunk piece of cheese pizza that is essential before getting on the train.

Once home, I really should have gone to bed, but it was a good TV night, so I allowed myself one show (Top Chef) from my DVR. I fell asleep twice trying to watch the last 5 minutes, which is always sort of an oddly comforting feeling. Like the TV is watching over me.

Truly, the non-existent Lord couldn’t have ordered up a better day.

I heart Wednesdays!

DAY 201: Backyard Blues.

April 6, 2008 · 1 Comment

Okay, I know I just posted yesterday about how I should stop bitching about work, money and my apartment. So please don’t look at this as bitching. Instead, I’m just stating how I feel…

Today, on this beautiful spring day, my upstairs neighbors began planting in our garden out front. Seeing this made me very, very sad that we will be moving out sometime soon in the coming months.

I have a backyard!!! But I can’t do anything with it. Well, I can, but it’s useless to put time and money into something that I won’t be around to enjoy.

Our backyard is in desperate need of a makeover. And I love makeovers! I had so many plans for that backyard. Here’s what I’m sadly going to be missing out on:

*Vegetable Garden. I wanted to plant carrots, cucumbers, green beans and tomatoes. Think of the salads I would have had!

*Grilling Parties. A hot summer night. Hamburgers, wieners, and veggie burgers on the grill. Corn on the cob. Grilled asparagus. Brewskies. Sangria. Will Smith’s Summertime playing in the background.

*Mojito Party! I wanted to have a Friday afternoon party where all of my friends ditched work early, or called in sick and came over to my backyard to sit in the sun and drink mojitos. It would have been the kind of party where you’re drunk by dinnertime and in bed by 10pm.

*Sun Tanning. This was going to be the summer that I was finally going to get rid of the farmer’s tan that I’ve had for 28 years. My room is right next to the backyard, so I was gonna put some Dolly on my iPod, crack open the windows, and go lay out in the sun for hours.

Wow, our first nice spring day… and I’m depressed.

DAY 127: Dear IKEA.

January 24, 2008 · 1 Comment

Dear IKEA,

Thank you for not having your MALM dresser in stock the first time I went to your store, bought a bunch of shit, and paid a ridiculous shipping fee to have everything delivered to me.

Thank you for charging me another ridiculous shipping fee when I ordered your MALM dresser online.

Thank you for shipping me a busted MALM dresser that took almost three weeks to arrive.

Thank you for making me spend two hours taking apart said busted MALM dresser and boxing it up (like you told me I had to do.)

Thank you for not picking up said busted MALM dresser (like you said you would) when you dropped off my replacement (and hopefully, not busted) MALM dresser. Now I have to try and see if our extremely picky garbage men will dispose of it.

Thank you for giving me a second opportunity to spend three putting together your MALM dresser.

Thanks again,
B. Kennedy

p.s. IKEA, in case you couldn’t tell… I was being sarcastic. But in all honesty, I guess I should thank you for giving me a good excuse to take the day off of work, so I could wait at home for the delivery guys.

DAY 12: Homo Improvment.

October 1, 2007 · 2 Comments

This weekend was pretty much spent indoors playing house. Which was probably a wise decision, since I’m broke. Yesterday, after getting home from work (yes, I was working on a Saturday, I wasn’t kidding about being broke) I made a HUGE list of things to get done this weekend. And while I didn’t really expect to get them all done, I came pretty close. Some of the tasks were pretty medial, but having a big, long list makes my OCD brain very happy, giving me more things to cross off and feel somewhat accomplished about.

WHAT WAS DONE:

*Put Together Bathroom Shelf. I multi-tasked by watching Intervention with Jeffrey while putting this beast together.

*Use Barnes&Noble Giftcard. This was a bday gift from my brother which had to be used online. Normally before I buy a book, I like to read the first paragraph to get a feel for the writer’s style. Obviously this could not be done online, so I had a hard time choosing. I ended up with No One Belongs Here More Than You by Miranda July and The Mole People, a book I know my roommate already has, but like I said, I didn’t want to risk getting something I couldn’t peruse first.

*Burn CD of Pics from Summer Trip Back Home for Mom, Dad & Sis. Done while watching some show that Jeffrey was into about extremely awkward, gay, Christian teens at summer camp.

*Update Netflix Queue. Like I said… medial.

*Mail in Paint Rebate. Money, money, money. I need it.

*Buy small lamp, round paper lanterns, cords for lanterns and window shades. I went to one of my favorite places to spend money (Pearl River Mart) and much to my surprise, found everything I needed. However, once I got home things didn’t work out so well. The lamp and lanterns are perfect, just what I needed to set the mood for my room and not make my accent wall seem so dark. However, now I need to get and industrial sized staple gun to deal with all the cords dangling from my ceiling. Also, I’m still searching for the perfect light bulb, a task that has proven much more difficult than anticipated. And don’t even get me started on my window shades. After spending a half hour searching for the exact ones that I wanted at the store, I come home to find out that they won’t hang in my window. All I have to show for them now is a few huge scrapes on my arms that makes me look like a cutter.

*Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market. I walked through this as quickly as possibly, trying to prevent myself from falling in love with anything that I couldn’t afford right now. Too late. I saw the perfect mirror for my room. $150. I didn’t buy it and I’m sort of regretting it.

*Laundry. Ahhh, so fresh and so clean.

*MySpace Bulletin/E-mail About Upcoming Shows. Class show this Tuesday. Shark Tank, Sunday night. Please come.

Watch Lots of Episodes of 30 Rock. Okay, this wasn’t actually on my list. But it did do lots of it this weekend.

WHAT WASN’T DONE:

*Make Returns to T.J. Maxx and Home Depot. I couldn’t find my receipt for the ugly sheets I bought at T.J. Maxx, which means that instead of getting my money back, I can only get store credit. What the fuck am I going to spend $40 on at T.J. Maxx?

*Get Refund or Raincheck for Mets Tickets. When my parents were in town this summer we tried to go to a Mets game but it got rained out. When I looked online today it said I had to mail the tickets in or go to the box office. However, it didn’t give me an address and there was no way in hell that I was going out to Shea Stadium this weekend. Also, this task was sports related, so it’s at the bottom of my list.

*Gather Sketch Ideas. Also at the bottom of my list. Being creative/funny is hard.

*Buy Mat for Room. It’s okay, maybe I’ll just fashion my unusable window blinds into a floor mat.

*Thank You Cards for Realitives. I forgot to buy these today. Which is fine, it will give me something to do at work tomorrow.

*Sign-up for an Online Dating Service. Ehhhhh.
